Amedeo MODIGLIANI

Amedeo MODIGLIANI, Self-portrait.

Amedeo MODIGLIANI (1884 – 1920) was an Italian Jewish painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France. He is known for portraits in a modern style characterized by a surreal elongation of faces, necks, figures and blank eyes. Modigliani's portraits are both specific and highly stylized, each uniquely revealing woman's inner life, while at the same time unmistakably "Modiglianized". Nudes scandalized audiences with their frank, unadorned sexuality.

The legend of his troubled life and early demise – and the subsequent suicide of his young fiancée, Jeanne Hébuterne – has tended to overshadow his significant artistic achievement. So Modigliani had little success while alive, but after his death achieved great popularity.
